The Best Candle Making Kits For Crafting At Home in 2023

“I think of myself as the olfactory Willy Wonka.”

Candle making is a great hobby to get into, not only because it’s a great way to spend time either by yourself or with kids, but also because you could turn it into a thriving business.

But it can be daunting if you’re unfamiliar with how candles are made. That’s where candle making kits come in.

But first, let’s have a quick look at the top three candle making kits from the lineup

They provide you with everything you need to start making candles, reducing the amount of things you need to buy (and usually the price, too!).

As an avid candle maker, I’ll be sharing my tips, advice and everything you need on making candles, as well as how to find the best candle making kits.

I’ve also included some recommendations of some of my favorite candle making kits that I like to use.

Best Candle Making Kits

Top Pick

Nature’s Blossom Candle Making Supplies Kit

Contains everything you need to get started. Includes detailed instructions that are easy to follow.

Nature’s Blossom Candle Making Supplies Kit

One of my favorite DIY candle making kits is by Nature’s Blossom, which contains everything you need to get started.

Great For Beginners

It’s specifically targeted for beginners as it includes detailed instructions that are easy to follow.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy this soy candle making kit if you’re an experienced candle maker!

Inclusions

The candle maker’s supplies kit comes with 1.5lb of vegetable soy wax flakes in 3 fragrant scents: lavender, lemon, and chamomile.

They all smell wonderful, but I like the lavender scent the best!

In addition to vegetable soy wax flakes, Nature’s Blossom candle make supply kits include everything you need such as; a large wax melting pot, 3 tin candle jars, 6 cotton wicks, wick stabilizers, and an instruction manual.

Jars

I enjoy that the tin candle jars are large as they allow you to make huge scented candles that have a lengthy burn time.

Paired with the aromatic scented soy wax, this means your house will smell lovely for even longer!

My only gripe with this otherwise quality candlemakers supplies kit is that it doesn’t come with glue dots so those you will have to get separately.

Sticking the cotton wicks to the bottom of the candle tins can be a bit fiddly as a result.

Specs

  • Package Size: 4.3” x 3.6” x 3”
  • Weight: 12 oz
  • Includes Wax Flakes: Yes

Pros

  • Easy to follow instructions – great for beginner and experienced candle makers!
  • Kit includes large tins and plenty of wax to make big candles

DINGAI Candle Making Kit

If you’re on a budget but want a quality candle making kit, then this one from DINGAI is a fantastic option.

DINGAI Candle Making Kit

If you’re on a budget but want a quality candle making kit, then this one from DINGAI is a fantastic option.

Inclusions

It comes with almost everything you need to make candles, including a melting pot, cotton wicks, candle wick stickers, and a candle wick center device.

Melting Pot

The melting pot is made from stainless steel, so it’s both rust and corrosion resistant, as well as capable of withstanding high temperatures.

It can also be used for boiling coffee and melting butter, chocolate, candy, etc., as it meets the standard of food grade

Stickers and Wicks

The candle wick stickers are a nice inclusion as they help you secure the cotton wicks to the bottom of your candle container.

Lastly, I really like that the cotton wicks are eco-friendly, which is a feature I always try to look for in DIY candle making kits.

Despite its positives, this candle making kit does have a couple of drawbacks.

Firstly, there’s no wax flakes included with the package, so you’ll need to purchase your own.

Secondly, the kit is rather small and you can only create a single candle at a time. In addition to this, the cotton wicks are a bit on the short size and can be a little difficult.

Specs

  • Package Size: 4.3” x 3.6” x 3”
  • Weight: 12 oz
  • Includes Wax Flakes: No

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Comes with almost everything you need to make candles
  • Eco-friendly cotton wicks

Cons

  • Doesn’t come with wax flakes
  • Cotton wicks are a little short and difficult to light

LAZCOZY Candle Making Kits Supplies

A great option for both beginner and experienced candle makers providing all things needed to make candles.

LAZCOZY Candle Making Kits Supplies

Out of all the candle making kits I’ve looked at, I think this one by LAZCOZY is the best in terms of quality.

It’s a great option for both beginner and experienced candle makers, providing you with everything you need to start making beautiful scented candles.

Inclusions

The kit includes a 1000ml melting pot, 2 bags of soy wax (2lb!), 6 dye blocks, a thermometer, a stirring stick, 50 candle wicks, 50 glue dots, 6 round candle tins with covers, 6 bow tie clips, 6 fragrances, and 12 warning labels.

Plant Based

As you can see, that’s a lot of bang for your buck! One of the best features about this candle makers supply kit is that the soy wax uses only plant-based additives that are naturally found in the environment.

There’s no unhealthy minerals in the wax, which makes for a smooth and clean burn.

Potent Fragrances

I really like the fragrances in this candle making kit as they’re potent and smell fantastic. I particularly love the sage and lavender scents as they make for an aromatic and meditative atmosphere.

The only downside of the LAZCOZY candle maker supply kit is that the tins provided can be a bit flimsy.

They also tend to get pretty hot when the wax is warm, so be careful not to place them on any surfaces that can’t withstand heat.

I remedied this by putting a coaster underneath the tins once I’d poured the melted wax into them.

Specs

  • Package Size: 8.27” x 7.09” x 1.97”
  • Weight: 4.63 lbs
  • Includes Wax Flakes: Yes

Pros

  • Provides you with everything and more to make candles
  • Soy wax flakes are made using only natural plant-based additives
  • Includes 6 aromatic fragrances
  • Great value

Cons

  • Candle tins can be a little flimsy

JXXXN Candle Making Kit Supplies

This kit comes with a lot of accessories that are good quality.

JXXXN Candle Making Kit Supplies

Next up on my best candle making kits is the JXXXN DIY candle making package, which comes with everything you need to get started in the hobby.

Inclusions

The kit includes a 400ml capacity pouring pot, 2 lbs of soy wax flakes, 6 candle dyes, 1 thermometer, 20 glue dots, 20 candle wicks, 4 fragrances, 1 spoon, 8 warning labels, and 6 candle tins and lids.

Now, that’s a lot of accessories!

Quality

By having a lot of accessories, you might assume that this soy candle making kit is poorly-made or uses inferior materials. However, that certainly isn’t the case!

The soy wax flakes are of a good quality and have a relatively long burn time, the wicks keep alight, and the melting pot feels strong and heavy-duty.

There’s even detailed instructions that are easy to follow.

All in all, this candle kit is a stellar option if you want to create candles that look and smell great.

However, this candle making kit does have a couple of drawbacks. For one, the tins are a bit small and feel a bit flimsy.

Additionally, the provided scents aren’t very potent.

“Personally, I prefer light, softer scents as some overly strong fragrances can give me a headache”

Specs

  • Package Size: 10.28” x 6.06” x 4.49”
  • Weight: 3.54 lbs
  • Includes Soy Wax: Yes

Pros

  • Kit includes a huge number of accessories
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • Soy wax, wicks, and melting pot are high quality

Cons

  • Candle tins are a bit small
  • Fragrances aren’t very strong

YRYM HT Candle Making Supplies Kit

A solid choice if you want to make candles, featuring natural soy wax flakes.

YRYM HT Candle Making Supplies Kit

This candle making suppliers kit is another solid choice if you want to make candles, featuring natural soy wax flakes (10lbs!), 200 pre-cut candle wicks, 200 glue dots, and a 2-wick centering device.

Natural Additives

One of the best features about this candle making kit is that its soy wax only contains natural plant-based additives.

You don’t need to worry about it producing any unhealthy chemicals such as toluene and benzene, which paraffin wax is thought to release.

Wax Flakes and Wicks

With a melting point of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, the wax flakes easily transform into a liquid to provide your home with a cozy feel.

The centering device also allows you to keep your wicks steady so you can create the best candles.

This candle making kit doesn’t provide you with everything you need to make candles as it doesn’t include a pouring pot or candle tins – you’ll have to purchase these separately.

The wicks also aren’t the best quality as they have a habit of rising once melted wax has been added.

Specs

  • Package Size: 13.4” x 13.1” x 4.8”
  • Weight: 11.62 lbs
  • Includes Wax Flakes: Yes

Pros

  • Soy wax only contains natural plant-based additives
  • Wax easily melts to give your home a cozy vibe

Why Make Your Own Candles?

In addition to being a fun and relaxing hobby, making your own candles can also serve other purposes.

Let’s take a look at a few reasons why a candle making kit is a purchase you definitely won’t regret!

Making Gifts

Beautifully Decorated Candles
Beautifully Decorated Candles

We all love when we get given gifts, but there’s something special about being given a handmade present.

They’re a more thoughtful gift than a store-bought or something ordered online – it shows the creator spent time making something they thought you’d love.

Custom Color and Scents

Making your own candles as gifts is a lovely idea, as you can customize them for a personal touch with bespoke candle makers supplies.

If you have a friend who loves flowery fragrances, design them a candle that fits that description in the shape of their favorite flower.

That’s a much more thoughtful gift than just nipping to the local store to get the first thing you see.

Hobby

Candle making is an enjoyable and interesting hobby that you won’t know you enjoy unless you try it!

Before I got into candle making, I thought the whole thing sounded dull and boring. I didn’t think there was much to it, other than throwing wax into some containers.

That perspective quickly changed when I received a candle making kit for Christmas 5 years ago.

Part of Daily Life

Pouring Wax Into A Container
Pouring Wax Into A Container

Fast forward to today and I think of myself as the olfactory Willy Wonka, I love mixing dyes and scents to make unique, one-of-a-kind personalized candles that smell beautiful. – The sky’s the limit!

I’ve developed a routine of locking myself away on a Saturday afternoon, drinking copious amounts of peppermint tea, listening to Diana Ross, and letting my imagination take over.

Even after a tough week of work, I thoroughly look forward to my Saturdays to whip up a new invention (in full Willy Wonka style, of course – but without the help of Oompa Loompas!).

Personal Favorite

One of my favorite candles that I like to make for friends and family is one I call the “Fizzler”. It’s a rich deep mahogany color, infused with orange blossom and pine fragrance oils, giving it a wonderfully fruity yet earthy scent.

I use wooden wicks that crackle and fizz like the sounds of a warm fire, hence the name “Fizzler”!

So, if you’re itching to get into a new creative hobby, I fully recommend giving candle making a try!

Business

Making your own candles could be a great way to earn a little money on the side, or even turn into a full-time business!

If you’ve got a knack for making uniquely-shaped candles, gorgeous scents, or even an eye for detail in terms of presentation, then selling your own handmade candles could be a business venture worth pursuing.

From Hobby To Profit

I know many friends who started candle making as a hobby, but rapidly gained notoriety on Instagram and other social media platforms due to their superb candle making skills.

What started as a small project soon became a huge business endeavor, with their candles being shipped worldwide!

Alternatively, if you’re always purchasing candles yourself, then making your own could help you save a bit of money.

As you probably already know, some candle brands can be pretty pricey, and may not get much life from as they don’t have a long burn time!

Customization

Candle Making Materials
Candle Making Materials

A candle making kit allows you to have full control of customization and the ingredients that go into your candles.

If you want to use eco-friendly or natural ingredients such as soy wax, cotton wicks, and essential oils from plant-based sources, then making your own candles lets you do just that.

Some candles contain stearic acid, which helps harden the wax and make it more opaque. However, as stearic acid is derived from animal fat, this makes the candle non-vegan.

Provides More Options

If you’d prefer to use vegan candles, then making your own allows you to have full control of what goes into the ingredients.

Additionally, candle making gives you the opportunity to create specific shapes, designs, or scents that you might not otherwise get with store-bought candles.

You never know, you might have a unique fragrance up your sleeve that’s never been created before!

Factors That Can Affect The Result

One of my biggest tips when making your own scented candles is don’t just blame your fragrance oil if your candle turns out with a weak or bad scent.

While the fragrance oil you choose does influence your candle’s scent, a lot of other factors can result in a poor scent throw.

If you use the wrong type of container or wicks for the type of candle you want to create, this can alter the scent throw. If you don’t add the correct amount of fragrance oil or dye, this can affect the scent throw.

If the temperature of the melted wax isn’t right (either too hot or too cold), this can also affect the scent throw.

As you can see, there are a lot of things that affect the scent throw of your candles.

NOTE

Make sure you keep an eye on all of these aspects when making scented candles to ensure you only make the most delicious fragrances!

Activity with Kids

Putting Wicks In Candles
Putting Wicks In Candles

Candle making kits can make a fantastic activity to do with kids, and it’s a little different than baking cupcakes or painting.

They can select the color, scent, and even design of their candle, as well as have a blast actually making it and learning how candles are made.

A candle making kit is definitely a project fantastic for a rainy day that’s sure to be a hit.

Keep Safety In Mind

However, you’ll want to take some precautions when making candles with kids.

Don’t let them handle hot wax or light candles – those are jobs for an adult!

Make sure they’re aware of the dangers of fire, and always supervise them closely while they’re making candles.

That said, kids can still have full creative input when creating candles – they could even sketch out their designs on paper first!

What’s Usually Included in Candle Making Kits?

Beeswax Candle Making Materials
Beeswax Candle Making Materials

Candle making kits usually provide you with everything you need to create candles, you get; a pouring pot, wax flakes, wicks, glue dots, candle tins, and wick stabilizers.

Some even come with a thermometer, wick centering device, and fragrances so you can create perfect scented candles.

However, the number of accessories you get in a candle kit depends on the brand.

NOTE

Check the contents of the kits to make sure you’re buying the best candle making kit for your needs.

What Is the Best Wax for Candle Making?

The best candle making kits are largely influenced on the type of candle you want to make. Beeswax and paraffin wax is ideal for making tapered candles, while soy wax is best used for container candles and tealights.

Bear in mind that beeswax is not vegan as it comes from bees.

Both paraffin wax and soy wax are vegan, so they’re good options to use if you’d rather avoid beeswax.

How Many Candles Can I Make with 1kg of Wax?

The number of candles you get to make with 1kg of wax depends on the size of your candle tins.

For example, if you’re using 300cl candle tins, 1 kg of wax will create 4 candles as you’ll be using roughly 250g of wax for each candle.

Things You Need to Consider You Get a Candle Making Kit

To ensure you pick the best candle making kit, there are a few factors you’ll need to get to grips with.

In this section, I’ll be going over some of the points you’ll need to keep in mind when choosing the best candle making kits.

Quality and Quantity of Wax

Melting Wax
Melting Wax

First thing’s first, you’ll need to check the quality and quantity of the wax in your candle kit.

Some kits don’t give you a lot of wax (or any at all!), while others provide you with plenty to get started.

How Check Wax Quality

If you get a kit with wax, then it’s important to study the quality of it.

The wax should melt clean without any black smoke.

Any foul burning smell or black smoke is an indicator of a poor quality wax.

Most candle making kits come with at least 1kg of wax, which will allow you to make around 4 medium-sized candles.

Melting Pot and Thermometer

Most candle making kits come with a pouring pot, which is a tool you’ll need to get to melt your wax in and transport it to your candle containers.

A thermometer will help you know when the wax has reached the right temperature and is ready to be poured into your containers.

Don’t Use Mercury Thermometers

Checking Wax Temperature
Checking Wax Temperature

Try to avoid mercury thermometers as they are no longer safe, particularly around children.

Broken mercury thermometers produce vapours that can be toxic if inhaled or ingested. Instead, use a digital or infrared thermometer when making candles from kits.

Amount of Wicks

Wicks are required in every candle as otherwise there would be no way to light it!

Most candle making kits contain wicks, but you’ll want to check how many you get as otherwise you won’t be able to create very many candles!

Scents

Not all candle making kits contain fragrance oils, so you’ll need to check whether the kit you want to get is specifically for making scented candles.

That said, fragrance oils can be bought separately and are easy to get without breaking the bank.

Even if your candle making kit doesn’t provide you with any scented oils, you can easily get a hold of some.

Personally, I prefer to get light, softer scents as some overly strong fragrances like coconut lime can give me a headache.

Consider Your Pets

Scented Candle Ingredients
Scented Candle Ingredients

You should also use caution when using scented candles if you have any animals in your home.

Strong scented candles can cause respiratory distress in dogs, cats, and small animals, so opt for subtler smells if you have pets.

NOTE

Additionally, candles made from paraffin wax should be avoided in households with pets as it’s more likely to release impurities or irritants than other wax types.

This could aggravate your pet’s respiratory system.

And lastly, keep candles far away from your pet’s reach to ensure they don’t ingest wax or accidentally knock them over.

Color Dyes

Color dyes allow you to make candles that aren’t just limited to the standard white/cream color.

If you want to make vibrant candles that truly stand out, then you’ll want to make sure your candle making kits include color dyes.

You can mix dyes from other kits you may have lying around to create any color from the rainbow.

Not Too Much

Colored Candle

However, make sure you don’t add too much dye as this can clog your wick, produce more smoke, reduce the melt poor, and affect the scent throw.

Only put the recommended amount of dye as stated in the manufacturer’s instructions of your kit.

Stickers/Labels

Stickers and labels aren’t mandatory if you’re making candles for personal use, but they’re a good idea if you want to create candles for gifts or profit.

Stickers/labels let you add any warnings or other important information about your candles.

Glue Dots

Glue dots are another accessory you’ll want to have on hand when making candles.

They help the wick stay in place when you add melted wax. They’re definitely a necessity to ensure your wicks stay in the right position!

Which Wax Holds the Most Scent?

Raw Wax
Raw Wax

Paraffin wax typically holds the most scent as it has a better scent throw than soy wax.

Soy wax, despite coming from a renewable source, can be a little finicky when it comes to absorbing fragrance oils. Although some of the best odor eliminating candles I’ve seen were made from soy.

Final Thoughts

Before we go, Here are the top three candle making kits from the list…

Out of all the products I’ve tried, I think the best candle making kit is Nature’s Blossom Candle Making Supplies Kit.

It’s affordable, high quality, and comes with everything you need (and more!) to make candles.

The candle making kit includes a huge number of accessories, such as melting pot, soy wax, wick stabilizers, wicks, candle jars, and fragrances.

The wax melts clean and easily, the wicks keep alight, and the fragrances smell lovely.

My only gripe with Nature’s Blossom candle making kit is that it doesn’t contain glue dots, but this is a minor flaw with an otherwise great deal.

Other Great Options

My other two recommendations are the LAZCOZY Candle Making Kit and DINGAI Candle Making Kit.

Editor’s Choice

Both are fantastic options, but the former is my personal favorite as it contains a huge number of products.

Despite being the pricier option out of the two, it’s worth the extra money simply based on how many accessories you get.

Best Value

JXXXN candle making kit is the most affordable option I’ve looked at, so it’s a great choice if you’re on a budget.

It comes with a good selection of products and uses eco-friendly cotton wax.

However, the candle making kit doesn’t come with wax flakes so you’ll need to purchase these separately.
